Two Kelowna United/UBCO Junior Heat teams completed the second leg of the PacNW Winter Classic tournament with the U15 boys team and the U18 boys team travelling to Seattle for the College Showcase weekend Jan 13th to 16th.
The U15 boys started strong, dominating their first two games with a 3-0 win over Crossfire Premier and a 2-0 win over the ISC Gunners. In their third game against Rainer Valley Premier, the Jr Heat boys were under pressure and down a goal early from a big and fast Rainer Valley team. After some adjustments, the Jr Heat team took charge of the game, and held the bulk of the possession and scoring chances for the remainder of the game. Head Coach Cam West notes that “an aggressive Jr Heat team had many chances from set plays and good ball movement, but could not find the back of the net.” With two decisive wins and a close loss, the U15 boys narrowly missed advancing to the final round.
The U18 boys, led by Head Coach David Lommer played right to the final Gold Medal game in the U18 Boys Premier Division. The boys toppled four teams in the round robin with a 4-0 win over Pacific FC Revolution, a 1-0 win over the U18 Boys Whitecaps Academy, a 1-0 win over the Central Washington Sounders, and a 2-0 win over Eastside FC. Undefeated and with zero goals against, the KU/ Jr Heat boys finished firmly atop their division and set them of for a game against the Washington East boys team. Similar to the Jr Heat, the Washington East team was also undefeated with zero goals against in their own division. They were also a scoring machine in the tournament with 17 goals scored over their first 4 games. The gold medal game was a tight match with chances for both sides, however the KU/Jr Heat boys ended the tournament with a 2-0 loss and a silver medal to bring home to the Okanagan.
Congratulations to both teams on your strong performances at this high level tournament!
