On Friday August 25th, Kelowna United’s Girls U11 team ‘Thunderstruck’ headed to Salmon Arm for a weekend of camping, and soccer, participating in the Twin Anchors “Shore N Score” cup.
The girls started the tournament strong on Saturday morning with a win against Prince George FC. Kelowna’s goals came from Rhiannon Maynes-Tourond (3) and Peyton Craig. MVP was awarded by PGFC to the “goal scoring machine”, Rhiannon.
The next game was against Shuswap FC, and once again, the girls played exceptionally well, despite the 33 degree heat, with goals coming from Rhiannon (2), Peyton (1), Sally Davies (1) and Sarina Tait (1). Sarina was awarded the game MVP.
This second win secured Kelowna’s spot in the final match on Sunday, but whether they would go into the final in first place or second place would depend on the outcome of Sunday morning’s game against SWU Calgary. Unfortunately, Kelowna couldn’t find the back of the net. resulting in a defeat. Peyton earned game MVP.
With SWU Calgary finishing at two wins and a tie, it put them in first place in the round robin, and Kelowna United in second – therefore the final on Sunday afternoon was a repeat of the morning’s game – SWU Calgary vs Kelowna United.
Once again, SWU Calgary was the stronger team, and Kelowna’s sole goal came from Rhiannon. MVP was given to both Sally Davies and Micah Ramsey.
Despite the disappointing loss in the final, the girls were thrilled with their silver medals.
